Men tend to compartmentalize their feelings and thoughts about, well, pretty much everything. Women naturally process thoughts and feelings and integrate them into one cohesive “thing.” Men don’t integrate their thoughts and feelings. They tend to file everything away, each thought and emotion getting its own compartment where it sits until the man is ready to deal with it, or not which is many times the case.

Compartmentalization can be a great way of managing difficult parts of your life. But it can backfire too. Some people bottle up all emotions and fail to deal with any of them. Over time, these negative emotions can build up and lead to emotional distress.

However, if you feel vacillating between the two worlds is opening you up to disassociate in ways that are harmful to yourself or the people around you, I encourage you to seek professional help with a mental health professional.

🌎✌🏻💙 Take care, be safe.

  1. Compartmentalization is a useful tool when used judiciously. It was a life saver in that it allowed me maintain composure while dealing with death and suffering. However it requires a reckoning on a regular basis…. Otherwise as you point out it can have dire consequences…

  2. Wow, Elle, this one spoke directly to my heart. I did file away feelings for such a long, long, time. Though the pain of working through them all was/is intense, the result is transformational. I love this piece. ❤️🌺🙏🤗✨
